Mourners stared in horror as the grave they were standing round collapsed — smashing open the coffin and exposing the corpse.
Several relatives and friends of Carlton Ebanks almost slipped into the hole as the clay walls crumbled, and had to be quickly hauled clear.
His shocked widow Helena then watched as a cemetery worker jumped in and tried to hurriedly repair the splintered casket and cover up Carlton’s body.
Yesterday the 62-year-old mother of six said: “There was dirt on my husband’s body and everyone could see inside the coffin and see his corpse. It was just awful.
“There were 500 people there, screaming and crying.”
Retired nurse Helena, of Hockley, Birmingham, said workers were still digging the grave when she arrived at Handsworth cemetery. They even left a JCB just yards away.
