Football Club on eBay

A football club owner is to put it on eBay after his attempts to give it away failed.

Dinel Staicu, owner of Romanian second division side Universitatea Craiova, tried to give the club to his local council.

He sent officials the ownership papers together with a covering letter saying he had had enough of being the butt of people's jokes.

But the council wrote back and said they were not interested now the once successful club had been relegated.

Town mayor, Antonie Soloman, said: "The biggest problem is that we simply do not have the money to finance a struggling team. The budget has been set for the year already and there is no extra cash for football.

Former Argentina soccer World Cup-winning captain Diego Maradona had his stomach stapled to reduce his ballooning waistline, his Colombian doctors said on Saturday.

Maradona, 44, had the two-hour operation in the picturesque port city of Cartagena on Colombia's Caribbean coast.

"Everything went well," Francisco Holguin, head of Cartagena's Medihelp clinic, where the operation was performed, told reporters.

He said the former superstar, who is 5-foot-6-inch-tall weighed 267 lb when he checked in, will spend three days in the clinic recovering.

The former midfielder only stopped playing professionally in 1997 but has grown almost unrecognizably fat in recent years despite spending much of his time in a Cuban clinic fighting cocaine addition

The city signed contracts with three cruise lines, and paid $11.7 million to rent five ships to use as temporary hotels along the river, which runs through the heart of the city.

"This is the epitome of what we were hoping for -- and that was a big ship in our downtown skyline," said Tom Petway, co-chairman of the Jacksonville Super Bowl Host Committee.

Petway was one of the first to board one of the ships, the Radisson Seven Seas Navigator. Exploring his 1,100-square-foot suite Wednesday, he declared: "This is really exceptional."

Eagles fans borrowing against their homes for Super Bowl trips
