Man Shot In Face Used Sign Language To Name Suspect

A jury watched a taped interview of a man who was shot in the face use sign language to identify the person who allegedly pulled the trigger during a trial in Brevard County, Fla., Monday.

Kelvis Smith was unable to talk after he was shot in the face in June of 2002.

However, a videotape played for jurors showed Smith spelling out the name of the man he says shot him and murdered his pregnant girlfriend in Brevard County.

26 Years To Complete His Degree - Better Late Than Never

Completing one's university degree is always a cause for celebration, but a Middlesex University student has a better excuse than most to crack open the champagne after passing his final exams a grand total of 26 years after enrolling.

Steven Coles was a fresh-faced 18-year-old when, in 1979, he began his first year of a BA Honours in Theatre with Performing Arts at Middlesex University's Trent Park campus, Cockfosters.

Adopted Orphan Remembers His Friends

A nine-year-old Bulgarian orphan who was adopted by a wealthy western family has given £6,000 worth of presents to his former playmates.

The youngster, named only as Axel by Bulgarian media, saved his Christmas and birthday money for five years to save up the cash to buy toys and clothes.

Axel was adopted five years ago by the family of a rich banker in Luxemburg from an orphanage in the small town of Dobrich.

The Channel Sailor Whose Breath Will Harness The Wind

Next month Hilary Lister will attempt to sail from Calais to Dover using only a straw to steer her yacht through the world’s busiest shipping lane.

She lost the use of her arms and legs to illness long ago and can move only her head, which will be less than 2ft above water on a route where passenger catamarans churn up wakes 8ft high.

“I think she’s absolutely barking mad,” her husband, Clifford, said at their home near Canterbury, “but I’m very pleased she’s doing it.”

Man Donates Blood For Record 350th Time

An elderly South African broke his own Guinness world record Tuesday when he donated blood for the 350th time, inspired by the enduring memory of a terrible accident he witnessed as a child.

The South African National Blood Service said in a statement that 79-year-old Maurice Creswick had cracked his own record for the fourteenth time and that he donated 480 ml of his blood every 56 days.

Man Survives 5 Days In Lava Field

A hiker lost for five days in a lava field near a volcano says he survived by drinking water he squeezed from moss in a mostly barren landscape.

Gilbert Dewey Gaedcke III, 41, was rescued Friday afternoon after a teenager on a helicopter tour spotted him stumbling across the rocky lava, trying to attract attention with a mirror from his camera.

A Lad of 18 has launched a budget airline from his bedroom.

Daniel Reilly will fly holidaymakers from as little as £50 one-way from Liverpool to the Canary Islands.

Last night Daniel — yet to receive his A-level results — said: “I started flying lessons and a friend joked that I should charge people to fly around in a Cessna.

“I began to take the idea more seriously when I started studying business and realised I could operate on a larger scale. I have been planning this for two years and now it is about to become a reality.”
