China's Death Buses

The country that executed more than four times as many convicts as the rest of the world combined last year is slowly phasing out public executions by firing squad in favor of lethal injections. Unlike the United States and Singapore, the only two other countries where death is administered by injection, China metes out capital punishment from specially equipped "death vans" that shuttle from town to town.

Executions in death vans are recorded on video and audio that is played live to local law enforcement authorities - a measure intended to ensure they are carried out legally.

Naked, Cuffed Suspect Flees From Hospital

A burglary suspect was charged with a string of crimes after bolting from a hospital, naked, handcuffed and with blood spurting from a stab wound in his chest.

A deputy had removed Rashon Delee's leg shackles so he could use the toilet at Crouse Hospital when he decided to make his run Sunday afternoon, said Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin Walsh.

Delee ripped out an intravenous drip, monitors and a chest tube, threw his hospital gown in a deputy's face and ran from the hospital.

Company Wants to Trademark Pizza Scent

The aroma of a freshly baked pizza is arguably as universally recognizable as that of a newly mowed lawn or a fresh cup of coffee.

But a Lithuanian restaurant chain now wants the intellectual property rights for the scent in the small Baltic nation, saying it is closely associated with its pizza pies.

"Opinion polls show that many consumers in Lithuania identify the pleasure of eating pizza with our trademark," said Mindaugas Gumauskas, marketing director of the Cilija company. "This makes us believe that the scent of freshly baked pizza is a subject to our copyright."

Power Shut Off After Woman Owes A Penny

It was just a penny, but to Consumers Energy it was enough to cut off power in a local home. Jacqueline Williams, 41, of Flint had an electricity bill of $1,662.08 and paid all of it, except for one cent. That wasn't enough for the power company, which blacked her out for seven hours Wednesday.

The CMS Energy Corp. subsidiary told Williams the power would not be turned on until the penny was received.

"I went down there, paid my penny and got a receipt," Williams told The Flint Journal.

Thieves Steal Rollercoaster

German police officers are asking for help in tracking down thieves who stole an entire rollercoaster.

The 20 ton big dipper, worth more than £13,000, was stolen from a truck that had stopped at a car park in Bischofsheim on its way to a nearby funfair.

Local police officer Martin Gruber said: "In all the years on the job I have never heard of a rollercoaster being stolen.

12-Year-Old Mom Fears Baby Will Be Taken Away

The schoolgirl who became pregnant at just 11 fears the child will be taken into care after its birth.

The West Lothian girl, now 12, is due to give birth next month. She said she was set for a meeting with social work staff this month to discuss the child's future.


She said she was first told she might lose custody, because her mother's house is too small and needs redecorating, in a talk with social work staff a fortnight ago.

And she told a national newspaper: "I won't leave the baby no matter what. I just need the chance to prove myself - I know I can be a good mum.

Bookmaker Has Eyes On Strip-Poker Record

Ireland will play host to the world's biggest ever strip poker contest if bookmaker Paddy Power gets its way.

The idea was originally floated as an April Fool's joke but generated so much interest that Dublin-based Paddy Power has decided to look seriously at organizing a contest it hopes will find a place in the Guinness Book of Records.

"We got almost 100 requests to take part," the company's spokesman, also called Paddy Power, said. "We're trying to investigate whether it's possible or whether we'll get put in prison for it."
